Serene Moments

Group Exhibition - 31 August - 15 October, 2024
Scieppan Gallery, REDBASE Gallery

Serene Moments brings together six artists from China, Indonesia and South Korea in an exhibition presented by Scieppan Gallery and REDBASE. Working across painting, drawing, sculpture, embroidery and textile, the artists slow the eye down, finding stillness, humour and quiet reflection in materials that range from oil paint and pen to wool, fibreglass and stitched canvas.

He Sen, trained at the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, reworks classical Chinese painting in oil, layering heavy impasto with effects drawn from ink wash. Gao Rong uses embroidery to recreate everyday objects and spaces in thread, turning the familiar into something tender and strange. Beijing-based sculptor Gao Xiaowu turns rounded, cartoon-like figures toward the absurdities of modern life and, more recently, toward themes of ecology and rebirth. South Korean artist Cheolyu Kim, trained as a sculptor, builds dense pen drawings from a childhood fascination with flight, where memory and dream dissolve into the fantastical. Indonesian artist Antonio S. Sinaga works with tufted rugs and tapestry, weaving personal and spiritual questions into bold, colourful textiles. Balinese artist Made Wiguna Valasara pads and embosses canvas into low relief, questioning the romanticised, tourist image of Bali.

Together, the works offer moments of pause, inviting viewers to linger with each material and the stories it holds.
