Gao Rong is a Chinese artist born in 1986 in Hang Jin Hou Qi, Inner Mongolia, who moved to Beijing in 2004 and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in 2010. She lives and works in Beijing.Gao Rong builds hyper-real sculptures entirely from embroidered, padded fabric, hand-stitched over custom-made structures to reconstruct everyday objects and whole domestic interiors — furniture, walls, doors, rusted pipes, enamel mugs — in painstaking detail. She learned the craft from her grandmother, who, exiled to Inner Mongolia during the Cultural Revolution, supported seven children by trading embroidery for food; in works such as The Static Eternity, Gao Rong rebuilds her grandmother's tiny, since-demolished home stitch by stitch. Turning a traditionally feminine folk technique to sculptural ends, she records the memory of a generation and the disappearing textures of a fast-transforming, post-Mao China.Gao Rong has shown with REDBASE Sydney in the duo exhibition Self Induced (2024) with her husband Ding Hui, and group exhibitions MAGNIFYcent (2026); Seamline: Narrative of Identity and Memory (2025), and Silent Threads (2024).

Her work has featured in major international exhibitions including the 18th Biennale of Sydney (2012), the 5th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (2013) and Chinese contemporary surveys at Istanbul Modern. Her work is held in the White Rabbit Collection, Sydney.
