Made Wiguna Valasara is an Indonesian artist born in 1983 in Sukawati, Gianyar — the Balinese village renowned for the Batuan school of painting — who graduated from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI), Yogyakarta, in 2007.

Raised by grandparents who made the cloth decorations of Balinese temples, he trained across both painting and sculpture, and now lives and works in Bali.Valasara is best known for his stuffed-canvas technique: he pads and embosses the canvas into low relief, treating it not as a surface to paint on but as a pliable, sculptural material, at times worked with embroidery. Into this tactile field he folds the visual language of traditional Balinese painting alongside appropriations of Renaissance and modern European art, questioning the romanticised, tourist image of Bali and the social and cultural pressures on the island today. His recent work turns on rwa bhineda, the Balinese principle of complementary duality.

In 2024 and 2025 Valasara showed in group exhibitions at REDBASE Art, Sydney. His work has featured in major surveys of Indonesian art, including Contemporary Worlds: Indonesia at the National Gallery of Australia (2019), the Jogja Biennale XIV (2017) and the SEA+ Triennale at Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Jakarta. He won the Public Vote Prize at the 2020 Sovereign Asian Art Prize and has been a finalist for the UOB Painting of the Year and the Indonesian Art Award.
