Yanuar Ikhsan
Indonesia
Yanuar Ikhsan (Yanuar Ikhsan Pamuji) is an Indonesian artist and academic born in 1992 in Karanganyar, Central Java, who lives and works in Central Java. He completed a Master's in the Creation and Study of Art at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta in 2019, and now lectures in Visual Communication Design at Telkom University Purwokerto.
Ikhsan's work begins with whatever unsettles his mind, and for several years that has been death. He sees it not as a source of dread but as the one experience shared by everyone who makes art and everyone who looks at it. Rather than rely on his own view, he returned to the village near Solo where he grew up and talked with his neighbours about death. Using this, he gives these ideas form across carved and fire-blackened wood, etching, woodcut, ceramics and welded iron. Oversized wooden matchsticks, their heads charred with real flame, stand in rows like memorials to what remains after a life has burnt down.
