Abdurrohman Wahid
Indonesia
Abdurrohman Wahid (b. 1989, Bekasi) is a visual artist and educator based in Bekasi, West Java. His dual background as both an artist and a civil servant profoundly shapes his creative approach, influencing both the conceptual process and the physical outcome of his work. Operating within the ambiguous space between realism and abstraction, Wahid juxtaposes figurative elements such as floral and botanical motifs, with richly layered, colorful abstract backdrops. Through a meticulous exploration of visual structure, color management, and semiotics, he treats color not merely as an aesthetic choice, but as a psychological stimulus for the viewer and a vessel for subtle symbolic meanings.
His exhibition history features prominent showcases, including the Indonesian Contemporary Art Exhibition MANIFESTO VIII "TRANSPOSISI" at the National Gallery of Indonesia (2022), the West Java Fine Arts Biennale "SINTESA" (2021), and the 1X1 TEMU 2021 exhibition at 2Madison Gallery. Wahid’s artistic achievements have been recognized through multiple accolades, including 1st Place in the Coffee Painting Contest by the Ministry of Agriculture (2021), 1st Place in the International Illustration and Poster Contest commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the March 1st Movement by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea (2019), and 1st Place in the Canson Watercolour Contest (2014).
