Andi Waskito
Indonesia
Andi Waskito, born in 1995, is an Indonesian artist whose work probes the boundaries of perception, interpretation, and identity.
Waskito works talk a lot about perception, interpretation, and identity. The perception of something can be very different from one person to another due to differences in experiences, emotions, situations and conditions. This makes most perceptions always lead to subjective interpretations or in other words, what people perceive is not necessarily true. Waskito started his series of watercolor paintings by observing the behavior of the people around him. He saw that not a few people justify other people from their outer image, without trying to know who and how that person is. This gives rise to opinions that are not necessarily true. From that point of view, Andi chose a deformative image to represent his conceptual narrative above. Andi feels the image of an object appearing on a block of glass is very appropriate in pursuing and simplifying metaphorically the topic he is thinking about, as well as in describing ambiguity and misinterpretation. Andi also explores faces a lot in his works, because he feels faces are features that are very commonly used to identify one human being with another.
His group exhibition included “Redbase Diaries #22” Redbase Art Gallery, Sydney, Australia (2022), and “Passion of Three Kingdoms” Redbase Art Gallery, Sydney, Australia (2021), also “PAP! (Post A Picture) | Perupa Muda #4” Bale Banjar Sangkring, Yogyakarta “Redefining Chapter” Redbase Art Foundation, Yogyakarta (2019), and “Ahoy!!! | Final Project ISI Yogyakarta” R.J Katamsi Gallery,Indonesia Institute of Art Yogyakarta (2019).
