A thing of beauty is sometimes described as “a feast for the eyes”, where feeling and understanding reaches further and deeper. In A Feast for Vision, four artists from China, Indonesia and Korea make works that seduce at first sight and then fill the mind through slower attention.

Chinese painter Liao Jianhua offers the eye a calm, near-monochrome field that up close teem with subtle, orderly variation, every mark overlaps the last so whole image seems quietly in motion. South Korean painter Sungmin Park renders ceramic tiles with such hyperreal precision that the eye accepts them as glazed clay. Only on close examination does the image reveal itself to be an oil painting flowing towards monochrome abstraction. Jihyun Park’s sculptures pool with vivid colour, pigment and resin seeping through wooden frames. The frames turn out to be industrial waste, die-cutting moulds discarded by printers in Seoul’s Euljiro district, and the pleasure of the eye becomes a meditation on consumption and obsolescence. Balinese sculptor I Wayan Upadana draws the eye with large shiny forms that resemble both religious objects and automotive parts, referencing an island negotiating between heritage and the pressures of tourism.
