Hojatul Islam
Indonesia
Hojatul Islam (b. 1980, Payakumbuh) is a Yogyakarta-based artist who graduated from the Indonesian Institute of Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta. His painting practice is widely recognized for its expressive landscape compositions that merge detailed realism with textured experimentation, gestural brushwork, and abstract paint applications. Through his work, he explores the intricate interplay between nature, space, and contemplative human experience.
In series such as Subuh Menjelang Pagi (2021), Islam depicts dramatic natural scenery, ranging from mountain ranges and dense jungle vegetation to flowing streams and valley vistas. He disrupts conventional landscape representation by leaving raw, unfinished canvas sections, paint drips, and subtle typographic markings across the painted surfaces. This visual juxtaposition creates a compelling contrast between realistic natural forms and dynamic modern painterly abstractions.
