Ricky Wahyudi
Indonesia
Indonesian artist Ricky Wahyudi explores the boundary between two-dimensional painting and three-dimensional relief through a signature process of canvas cutting and spatial manipulation. Utilizing acrylic, spray paint, and layered canvas cuts on stretched canvas support, his technical methodology transforms the flat picture plane into dynamic, rhythmic surfaces that physically interact with light, shadow, and viewer perspective.
His practice centers on the physical deconstruction and reassembly of space, time, and transformation. In works such as Deep Blue Space, Incanto lo Spazio e il Tempo No. 1, Atom Soliter No. 5, and Berubah Diubah Merubah, Wahyudi slices, twists, and weaves canvas strips over painted backgrounds. This precise spatial intervention creates slitted apertures through which underlying colors, geometric forms, and gestural paint passages reveal themselves. By introducing real depth and structural tension to the canvas, his work engages the viewer in a shifting perceptual experience where changing viewpoints alter the visible composition.
