Fikril Hanif

Malaysia

Ahmad Fikril Hanif was born in Malaysia and graduated with a degree in Fine Arts (majoring in Painting) from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). In his practice, Fikril explores the power of alphabets as essential symbols of human communication and cultural connectivity. Viewing typography through a unique sociopolitical lens, he examines how the Roman alphabet has historically functioned like a modern "instant product", simplifying global exchange while gradually shifting traditional local scripts and complex cultural narratives. Combining monoprint, drawing, acrylic painting, and experimental installation work, his multi-layered compositions overlay text, everyday imagery, and regional themes to capture transient emotions and open ongoing cultural conversations.

Fikril has participated in artist-in-residence programs, including the AIR Program at REDBASE Foundation in Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2018). His work and installations have been presented in solo and group exhibitions across Malaysia and Indonesia, including REDBASE Foundation and Setudio Minyak.

INSTANT

Solo Exhibition - 19 November - 21 December, 2018
REDBASE Foundation Indonesia

Instant by Ahmad Fikril Haniff stems from a deep exploration of the instant product phenomenon and the social constellation surrounding it. Born from the human tendency to avoid complexity in order to save time, energy, and money, instant products have spread to every corner of the globe. Yet, much like two sides of a coin, this convenience brings distinct implications to the perspective of modern society. This phenomenon is closely intertwined with the emergence of the Instant Generation, a demographic that grows alongside technological development, becomes accustomed to instant access, and frequently loses the essence of enjoying the process while remaining overly fixated on final outcomes.

In this exhibition, Fikril intertwines these social issues with his primary visual language utilizing alphabet elements. Through a medium exploration that transcends conventional boundaries, the artist presents an installation work entitled Instantsius Alphabeticus. This work brings together the position of the alphabet, which functions to simplify communication much like the expansion of Roman writing that displaced local scripts. With the characteristics of instant products that offer practicality. This concept is visually translated through the form of letter installations packaged in plastic resembling ready-to-consume instant commodities, underlining how speed and convenience have reduced human experience in appreciating a process.
