Liu Xi
China
Liu Xi is a Chinese ceramic sculptor born in 1986 in Shandong Province, who lives and works between Jingdezhen, China, and, more recently, Valencia, Spain. She graduated from the Sculpture Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), Beijing, in 2010.
Liu's practice expands both the technical and conceptual boundaries of ceramics. Characterised by meticulous craftsmanship and a restrained sensuality, her sculptures examine sexuality and intimacy, freedom and constraint, identity and self-formation, and the fluid tensions between femininity and masculinity. Through sustained experimentation across form, surface and process — porcelain worked to the edge of what the material will hold — she turns clay into a language that is at once bodily, poetic and conceptually rigorous.
Her work has been shown internationally in Forever Tomorrow: Chinese Art Now at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki (2026); Dimensions: Contemporary Chinese Studio Crafts at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2025); and the touring exhibition Stepping Out! Female Identities in Chinese Contemporary Art, presented at Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Kunstforeningen GL STRAND, Copenhagen, and Lillehammer Art Museum, Norway. She has participated in ceramic biennales across Spain, Portugal, South Korea and Taiwan, receiving First Prize at the VIII International Ceramic Biennale, El Vendrell (2015) and the Silver Prize at the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale (2016). Her work is held in major public and private collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the White Rabbit Collection, Sydney; the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taiwan; Galila's P.O.C, Brussels; and the Museu de Ceràmica de l'Alcora, Valencia.
