When you gaze into an oil painting by German artist Stephan Kaluza, your first thought may be that he is painting a photorealistic rainforest taken from one location. However, you would be mistaken. The paintings in The Disappeared and the Lost are not photorealistic but hyperreal. They are an amalgamation of references – from Costa Rica to Southeast Asia – that construct a fading natural non-place. Kaluza scatters these references across his studio floor, where ferns could be from many places and the undergrowth – a montage. Through this process of distorting nature into a more-than-real fantasy, Kaluza navigates our dislocation from the natural world as we gaze at fleeting beauty – moments before it all disappears.
