As a stage in a journey, a step in a process, and a means of unraveling the complexities of transformation throughout an artist’s creative development, the concept of “phase” offers an intriguing framework for reflection. It represents not merely a period of time, but also a process of change, growth, and metamorphosis within artistic creation.

This concept is evident in Yopi Cahyono’s solo exhibition PHASE, held at the Redbase Foundation, which presents works from a significant period in his artistic journey. Yopi’s works can be understood as a culmination of his thoughts and evolving understanding of art, marking a transition from one stage of practice towards the next.

Technically, the works presented in this exhibition reveal increasingly spontaneous lines, with distinctive approaches to composition, colour, distorted forms, and exploration of materials. During this phase, Yopi frequently incorporates text and writing into his works — sometimes carrying clear meaning, while at other times functioning as aesthetic elements that reinforce the ideas he wishes to express. Some of these texts recall Jacques Derrida’s concept of “sous rature,” suggesting words that are insufficient yet remain necessary and meaningful. Through the developments explored in this phase, a question emerges: will the next stage lead towards deconstruction? Only time will reveal.

This statement reveals that many of Yopi’s themes originate from his everyday experiences. Throughout life, we move through numerous phases, and in his visual works, Yopi reflects these transitions from day to day, week to week, and year to year. His works embody moments of joy, sorrow, and loss, capturing the accumulation of personal experiences over time.

In this particular phase, external influences — such as life, nature, society, and language — form the central thread of his practice. These concerns differ from potential future explorations of more internal themes, such as philosophy, illusion, and formalism, which may emerge in the next phase of his artistic journey.

Yopi Cahyono’s solo exhibition PHASE at the Redbase Foundation aims to create a space where aesthetic experience is formed through the interaction between the artist’s contemplation and the viewer’s capacity to perceive and engage with beauty. The exhibition hopes to encourage dialogue — whether between the artist and audience, or among different interpretations and forms of appreciation. It also provides an opportunity to examine the relationship between Yopi’s thoughts, processes, and the works presented.
